How the Study Works

Everyday Objects is a Bible study that uses visual association with objects we see in our daily life to memorize God's word. Very simply:
1. You see an object
2. A word comes to mind (any word, not just 'Spiritual' words), 3. Using a Bible Concordance, you find & study a verse in the Bible that has that word understanding the context & application to your life.
4. Everytime you see that object, you try to recall the verse or the Biblical application to your life.

The study uses things we see everyday to guide us into and remind us of God's Word.
Example:
When you see a coffee pot, you may think of the word morning or cup. You use a condordance to look up verses with the word morning or cup & study the verse--trust me, both those words are in the Bible. You pick one verse & do a study on that verse. Then, through the week, every time you see a coffee pot you try to remember the verse and application. Before you know it, you'll have the verse memorized! The more objects you do, the more verses you'll remember and the more of God's Word you'll be hiding in your heart & mind! It's that easy.

Faucet/Sink

Words: Hot/Cold
Verse: Revelation 3:15 "I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other!"
Application: God does not want us to compromise on His Word or commands. He would prefer authentic Christians--He can handle the truth as it is seen as confession. Being "lukewarm" is another form of hiding from God the truth (that He already knows). He can't work in an area if I am hiding the truth from Him.
Personal: Am I lukewarm in any area of my life when it concerns God and my beliefs?? Am I authentic with God about everything and allowing Him to work in areas where I'm 'cold?'

Deodarant

Word: Sweat
Verse: Matthew 22:44 "And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground."
Application/Personal: This verse, of course, is about Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane when he was praying before his crucifixion. An angel ministered to him and strengthened him in the prior verse. He must have needed the strength for the 'harsh workout' he was about to endure. I workout and run quite a bit, and I sweat, but the thought that Jesus was sweating to the point of the drops being as big as blood clots (according to the commentaries) takes my breath away at the thought of the Spiritual and emotional 'workout' He must have been going through. What a sweet reminder to me of His love and care for us through His incredibly painful & agonizing death each time I work out! Praise the Lord! Thank you Jesus for our Sacrifice!

Rocks

Word: Rock
Verse: 1 Cor 10:4-5 "They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert.
Lesson: This verse is intended to be a lesson for us to learn from the Israelites. Even though they all were nourished by God in the wilderness, some still grumbled, indulged, tested, were idolators, etc.
Application: Although I say I am a Christian, my mouth may confess (as the Israelites did) but where is my heart? Do I have undivided attention & devotion to the Lord?

Milk

Word: Milk
Verse: 1 Peter 2:2 "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation. AND Hebrews 5:12 "In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
Application: While one verse seems to encourage drinking spiritual milk and the other somewhat admonishes it, in actuality, both verses point to spiritual growth. When we first believe we should have a steady diet of God's Word, as we grow we are to put the Word into practice (the meat), but we are to continue in craving and drinking in the Word of God.
Personal: How's my diet and growth going? Do I crave daily milk (the Word)? Am I eating enough meat (putting it into practice)?

Garbage Can

Word: Garbage
Verse: 2 Tim 2:20 "In a well furnished kitchen there are not only crystal goblets and silver platters but waste cans and compost buckets--some containers used to serve fine meals, others to take out the garbage. Become the kind of container God can use to present any and every kind of gift to his guests for his blessing." The Message
Application: Am I becoming the kind of Christian God can use--a 'vessel' of purpose for Him and blessing to others?

Coins

Word: Coin
Verse: Luke 21:2 "He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins."
Learning: Several things were interesting in my study: 1.) the word "love" is used with money--very powerful; 2.) the widow's mite is often referred to as singular, but she actually gave 2 mites--she gave all she had; 3.) Jesus noticed the widow's 'small' sacrifice more than the Pharisees 'grandious' offereings.
Application: 1.) Check my motive in everything--God sees the little things with a pure motive over the 'big' things with an impure motive. 2.) Take heed at the power of money 3.) Give everything I have to Jesus.

Pencil

Word: Write
Verse: Luke 16:6 " "And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty."
Application: This was a tough study, and admittedly so from the commentaries I read on the passage. It was about the shrewd manager and is sometimes misinterpreted that Jesus, in it, is condoning keeping false accounts. To the contrary, he never did but instead pointed out some qualities the man did have that could be followed. The commentary did a much better job of explaining it than I can, so from the BibleGateway. com commentary directly: "The Lord referred to in this parable commended not the fraud, but the policy of the steward. In that respect alone is it so noticed. Worldly men, in the choice of their object, are foolish; but in their activity, and perseverance, they are often wiser than believers"
Personal: Are there any was in which non-believers are being better stewards than I am--how can I learn from their example?

Calendar/Planner

Word: Plan
Verse: Proverbs 16:9 "We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps."
Application: We can make all the plans we want, but as a Christian, I need to remember to surrender them to the Lord and let him direct my steps. Even when my plan is in alignment with what I believe to be His will, I need to surrender the 'how to get there' to Him.

Review Lessons 1 - 10/Most Memorable Lessons

Hi ladies!
Well, for me the most memorable lesson was the one with the picture of the laundry. The verse I studied was John 20:5-8 when Jesus rose from the tomb and the linens were remaining. I truly cannot look at my kids clothes on their bedroom floor or the folded laundry the same again! Praise the Risen Lord!

Mirror

Word: Reflect
Verse: "And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect theLord's glory are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." 2 cor 3:18
Study: The root of the word Glory means thoughts or opinions. In this case, the thoughts or opinions of God are true and changeless. "God's opinion marks the true value of things as they appear to the eternal mind, and God's favorable opinion s true glory." (The Complete Word Study Dictionary by Spiros Zodhiates") The true glory of man, is to return to the original condition which God intended when He made man--that restoration/transformation can take place through Christ alone!
Application: If we are honest with Christ (through confession) we see Jesus' revealed in his splendor, can ascribe to Him His full recognition, and can be returned to our original purpose--being in relationship with, being filled by, and reflecting His love in our lives.

Flowers

Words: flowers, vase, cut
Verse: Isa 40:8 "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."
Application: It hit me how long the Bible has been around and how it hasn't really had an 'upgrades' or been 'new & improved.' Things of this world are so temporary, but God's Word and His promises are solid forever! I can rely on Him and His Word.

Stop Sign

Word: Stop
Verse: "As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, nobody in the regions of Achaia will stop this boasting of mine " 2 Cor 11:10
Application: Paul was criticized no matter what he did. We will be criticized by the enemy no matter what we do because that's what the enemy's goal is. We need to have our confidence in Christ and give Him all the glory.

Shoes

Words: Pair, two, shoes, feet
Word: Feet
Verse: Romans 10:15 "And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"
Application: This was a good reminder that when I put on my shoes to go anywhere I should think about and prepare myself to bring the 'good' news of the Gospel of Jesus and salvation.

Facial Tissue

Word: Cry
Verse: Psalm 22:2 "O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest." NASB
Facts/Observations: In Psalm 21 David has strength; Psalm 22 he is crying out; Psalm 23 he appears to have peace. Psalm 22 is a foretelling of Christ's suffereing on the cross. He is the only one who was ever forsaken by God--briefly & momentarily--and that for my (our) sake! By the end of Psalm 22 David is reminding himself of God's faithfulness and is turning his thoughts to trusting God.
Application: I am reminded in these Psalms of the ups & downs of this life. We will get discouraged in this world, but 1.) I need never worry about being forsaken because Christ did so for our sake; 2.) Crying out to and relying on the Lord is the right thing to do when I am discouraged. 3.) I need to remind myself of God's faithfulness during discouraging times and trust in Him.

Week 5 - Welcome Mat

Word: Welcome
Verse: Matthew 10:14 (NIV)" If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town."
Facts: Interestingly, this passage is also found in Mark & Luke, and another reference to the disciples carrying out Jesus' direction is found in Acts. Jesus directed the disciples on what to do if the people rejected their message. To paraphrase verse 13 & 14, 'be courteous and gracious but if they don't accept it, move on.'
Application: This passage was once used out of context by a church I attended long ago so I was sensitive to it. The word welcome was translated "received" and I found upon further research: to mean 'gladly received,' 'had a warm reception,' 'joy brining.' This time, the verse spoke to me about attitude--my attitude--toward God's Word. In my heart I found myself asking 'do I gladly receive (with joy & a warm reception) all of God's Word or, conversely, do I reject any part of it?

Week 4 - Newspaper

Word: Deliver
Verse: 2 Corinthians 1:8-10 "For we do not want you to be unaware, brethren, of our affliction which came to us in Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life;
9 indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves so that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead;
10who delivered us from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us, He on whom we have set our hope. And He will yet deliver us, Application: Just like the paper gets delivered daily, God is available to deliver us daily from our trials--we just have to let Him & rely on Him to. "

Application: Just like the newspaper that has gotten delivered every day to date, gets delivered daily and will continue to be delivered, God can & will deliver us from our daily trials--if we let Him and rely on Him.

Week 3 - Toothbrush

I have to admit, when I first picked this object, quite a few thoughts came to mind and I (mistakenly, I confess) thought the study would take me a ‘same old lesson.’ But, faithful as He is, God is God and His ways are not my Ways (PTL!).
The first initial thoughts that came to mind were not even words they were immediate ‘Spiritual’ correlations
· Brush 3x = Peter denied Christ 3x; the 3-in-1; Christ rose in 3 days
· Popularity in our times (almost to obsession) with whitening teeth = am I obsessed with whitening my soul?
· We buy whitening trays to whiten our teeth in an hour =Christ can whiten our soul in an instant of asking.
· I eat and drink and it stains my teeth & I need to brush = I sin it stains my soul and I need to confess
· I am pretty passionate about fresh breath =am I as fervent about having a ‘fresh’ aroma of Christ or speaking with clean words?
But, since I encourage all of you that the whole point of the study is not to just think Spiritual words, but to trust the Spirit’s guiding in getting a lesson out of whatever Word God wants me to have
[As an aside, I want to be clear, I’m not trying to infer that it’s bad that we have immediate Spiritual thoughts—that’s good. That’s the point. But the further point in the study and using the very first words that come to our minds is to get our non-Spiritual thoughts turning toward Spiritual ones.]

So anyway, I prayed and felt led to stick with the obvious for me: teeth
I was led to go to the not-always-so-popular book of Amos: Chapter 4:6

“And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places yet have ye not returned to me, saith the Lord.”

Facts & Spiritual lesson I gleaned: The book was written by Amos, who was a sheep breeder, non-educated. He was described in one commentary as a “stern prophet of righteousness and uncompromising justice.” (I liked that and didn’t know that about him) He lived in times much like ours now—people were going through the motions of ‘church’ and the right sayings, but they were really more interested in doing their ‘hour
And getting back to the marketplace and treating each other corruptly. (youch!) My study led me to a small study guide on the book of Amos that recapped the book in 10 words or less: “Real religion isn’t just ritual but treating people with justice.”

Application: This came as confirmation to what God has been saying to me for over a month! (Wow, from a toothbrush & Amos come confirmation ;-) ) Get real with Him. God was reminding me again to be authentic. Put my faith & words into action. So often we have the right “label” or say the right “words” but the actions don’t match. (when I say ‘we’ I do mean ‘me’) He was telling me to give it my all, but make sure I finish with a smile. I can be well-intended and give it my all but if I end the day frustrated and resentful, what good is it? I can wear the label of Christian and say I will pray but if I don’t actually do it, what good is it. (hmm...didn’t Pastor Bob say that too this weekend??) I can be involved in multiple ministries, working my fingers to the bone out of ‘sacrifice’ but if I do it to please man and it’s not what God calls me to, what good is it? I can put in ‘time’ on Sunday, but if I get in the car and yell at the traffic, what good is it? I can have the label of ‘married’ but if I treat my spouse with contempt what good is it? It was confirmation to get real! To give it my all and finish with a smile—even if that means saying ‘no’ to some things or doing fewer things more genuinely.
It was like He was confirming and encouraging in the gentlest of ways that only He can “don’t just wear the label of Christian…try to act it in everything you do, and when you fail, repent and give it another go—but I can smile through it because of God’s strength & grace.”
I'm not usually this wordy, but felt the need this week...now gotta go brush that smile! :-) Have a great week.

Week 2 - Laundry

Word: Clothes, folded
Verse: John 20:5-8 "And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed."
Facts: The body could not have been stolen because the linens were neatly folded! John's comprehension of the resurrection at the site of the clothes.
Spiritual: The reality of Jesus resurrection; the details God attends to. The rest of chapter 20 tells about Jesus' patience with the disciples in helping them realize the reality of his resurrection.
Application: I don't think I'll look at a pile of my kids clothes on the floor or fold them without remembering this passage and try to comprehend the reality of the resurrection. He is not dead, He is risen!

Week 1-Bills/Checkbook

My Word: Debt
Verse: Romans 13:8 "Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law."
Study: The words "continuing debt (of love) hit me the most--continuing meaning goes on and on, like a bill on "auto pay" for the rest of our life. However, the word "love" used here is the agape type of love-deep, unselfish love. This meant to me that this is the type of debt that isn't necessarily easy to repay. After all, it's easy to continually love someone we feel brotherly love towards--but this kind will take some tapping into other resources.
Application: To choose to pay this continuing debt (of love), we must draw on our "saving" for this kind of love--saving by Christ & the resource of the Holy Spirit.
